After accomplishing his own goal in the technology arena at NEC’s Central Research Laboratories, he stepped into a new challenge to put him in the business management arena. During the last half of this second challenge, he served as Senior Vice President of NEC America, Inc. from 1994 through 2002, being responsible for the entire NEC’s communication systems business with North-American telecommunication carriers. He made an interesting finding during his tenure in the US that his knowledge gained through R&D can be effectively applied to improving business operations as well, successfully having transformed himself into a business executive. He could expand his business as large as to over 6 times, while simultaneously achieved significant cash flow improvement through reducing inventory and shortening accounts receivable collection period by motivating people to work with his unique method of daily PDCA (Plan, Do, Check and Action) management.

After joining Sangikyo, he has made significant contribution in transforming the company into “The Optimization Company” through careful articulation of key concepts and developing a driving mechanism named “Optimization-Ware” which provides a cyberspace where answers to any “need-to-know” information regarding company operations and working know-how can be inquired at any time from anywhere without bothering others and where executives, managers and employees can virtually get together to exchange information, knowledge, ideas and opinions beyond time and working location constraints. With the articulated concept and the tools, the management team successfully strengthened the company against the economic turbulence. Dr Maruta’s experiences as a researcher and a research manager have been very much instrumental to create and nurture a team of system architects in order to develop, upgrade and maintain innovative own business management tools within the company.
